As a parent, you want to do the best you can in caring for your baby. There is so much information out there and it can be quite confusing when trying to find the best options for the care of your little one. Hopefully this post will provide you with the information you need to simplify your approach to the care of your baby's skin.
Babies are born with a waxy coating on their skin called vernix caseosa. This coating acts as a natural moisturizer, cleanser, temperature regulator and protectant against infection. It actually has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that are similar to breastmilk. For these reasons it is not a good idea to bathe a newborn for at least 24 hours and you certainly can wait longer than that. After baby is born, simply drying the blood and amniotic fluid off the newborn is all that is needed to clean them. It is a wonderful thing for baby and mama to take that first bath together at home sometime during the first week of life. No soaps are needed, maybe just a few healing herbs in the bathwater. Grandma's Lavender has a Post-partum bath tea that is perfect for this first bath and is beneficial to both baby and mama. We do not recommend using bath salts for the bathing of a newborn, just the bath teas.
Babies do not need to be bathed frequently and any chemicals should be avoided when caring for baby's skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body and what we put on the skin is absorbed into the body. So many skin care products for babies contain harmful chemicals such as sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate, formaldehyde, parabin and carrgeenans. Theses chemicals can cause organ toxicity, disrupt hormone production and cause gastrointestinal inflammation and issues. These chemicals are even found in some organic products. It is very important to read labels carefully and stay away from any of these chemicals.
If you are going to use a cleansing or moisturizing product on your baby, it is important to use a product that is as natural as possible. Even baby wipes often contain these harsh chemicals. Grandma's Lavender has a line of baby care products that are simple, natural and organic and are free of any harmful chemicals.
